California Poppy groeit goed in tuinen met droge grond en veel zon. De plant is een vaste plant die als eenjarige wordt gekweekt. De bloemen blijven gesloten tijdens nat of bewolkt weer. Zaailingen zijn enigszins moeilijk te transplanteren en zelfgezaaide vrijwilligers kunnen van soorten van inferieure kwaliteit zijn. Verwijder dode bloemen om de bloei te verlengen en te verbeteren.

Rechtstreeks zaaien in de tuin heeft de voorkeur. Het zaad kiemt in 10 tot 12 dagen bij 55 tot 60 graden. Plant het zaad een centimeter diep. De plant is moeilijk te transplanteren vanwege de aftakkingswortel.
