Er zijn verschillende stoffige molenaars binnen het geslacht Centaurea. Alle zijn gekweekt voor zilvergrijs gebladerte, handig bij het mengen van bloemen met contrasterende kleuren. Ze groeien op een vruchtbare, goed doorlatende grond en geven de voorkeur aan warme, droge, zonnige locaties.
